Abstract
This talk will elucidate with examples the conceptual and vocabulary problems users faced when searching the web. It will how how a well structured thesaurus can be used as knowledge base for an interface that can assist user with search topic clarification (for example through browsing well structured hierarchy and guided facet analysis and with finding good search terms through query term mapping and query term expansion-synonym and hierarchic inclusion. This talk will cover thesaurus structure needed to support these functions: concept term relationships for vocabulary control and synonym expansion, conceptual structure (Semantic analysis, facet and hierarchy) for topic clarification and hierarchy query term expansion. Several thesaurus samples will be presented to illustrate these principles. Thesauri and classification such as the Library of Congress Subject and Library of Congress Classification, Sears List and Dewey Decimal Classification, Medical Subject Headings and Library of Congress Medical Classification, Standard Occupational Classification, Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT), ERIC, Wordnet contain structured vocabularies that provide knowledge based support for end user searching. However, if we want to create a knowledge-rich description of for example an (image of an) art object, medical, business, crime etc. such as required by the "semantic web", thesauri turn out to provide only part of the knowledge needed. A research project team from the Knowledge Technology Research group from the Faculty of Information Science & Technology, UKM conducted a research where we look at problems related to capturing background knowledge for Islamic resources. We conducted a case study in which we attempt to construct a multilingual ontology using well established thesaurus such as Library Congress Subject Heading, Library of Congress Classification and various references sources including Wiki’s term mapping represented in the ‘see also’.
